I don't understand why it was read as condescending, but I do think that there was very little he could have said at that moment that would have been acceptable.

Her most ardent supporters are convinced that he 'stole the nomination' because she 'won the popular vote'. These are both incorrect, but they came from her. She needs to correct them at some point.

It's not condescending, but because it came from a man when women were feeling raw, they viewed it that way.

Thank you, Karoli for trying to help me understand this. That might be the only explanation - that anything said about Clinton by Obama is heard as negative because of the raw feelings. I could understand the other arguments (even while disagreeing with them) but this one really puzzled me.
